TESL Internship in Thailand
I am Cecil Hill, a graduate student in the TESL program at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. This website is intended to provide information about ENGLISH 5313: Internship in TESL (for 3 hours of graduate credit) scheduled for the Summer Session, 2001, at OSU's Tulsa campus.


 COURSE DESCRIPTION

After one week of instruction in Tulsa (June 4 - 12, 2001), during which we will examine theoretical and pedagogical aspects of teaching English overseas, we will travel to Bangkok, Thailand (June 14 through June 28, 2001) for in-class observations and practice-teaching experiences in selected schools and universities (primarily at Chulalongkorn University).

SAMPLE ACTIVITIES

  • Observation of Thai teachers teaching English (at both the college and secondary levels)
  • Observation of EFL classes taught by native English teachers in Thailand
  • Interactions with Thai students, Thai teachers, and native English teachers in Thailand
  • Supervised practice-teaching opportunities
  • Firt-hand experience in the joys of living overseas Sight-seeing, shopping, and other touristy things in spare time

CREDIT REQUIREMENTS

  • Class attendance and completion of reading and written assignments prior to departure
  • An evaluative written report on the Thai experience
  • Supervised practice teaching and/or tutoring in Thailand
  • Written reports of other instructional activities in Thailand

COST ESTIMATE

  • Approximately $1,650 including round-trip airfare from Tulsa, accommodations (double occupancy) at the campus Guest House, and OSU-Tulsa tuition for three hours of graduate credit for ENGL 5313: TESL Internship
  • Non-students/non-credit participants (e.g. spouses or friends) are welcomed to join the tour. (The cost for non-students will be approximately $1,300.)
  • (Not included: food, which is relatively inexpensive in Thailand. Participants will also need money for personal expenses like sight-seeing, special tours, shopping, etc.)
